Legionnaires' Disease

Description

A severe form of pneumonia — lung inflammation usually caused by infection. It's caused by a bacterium known as Legionella. Most people catch Legionnaires' disease by inhaling the bacteria from water or soil.

Common Symptoms

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • High fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headaches. It can also cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Common Causes

  • Inhaling small droplets of water in the air that contain Legionella bacteria. The bacteria thrive in warm water systems, like hot tubs, cooling towers, and large plumbing systems.

Treatment Information

Treated with antibiotics. Most people who get sick need care in a hospital but make a full recovery.
