Lichen Planus
Description
An inflammatory condition that can cause swelling and irritation on the skin, scalp, nails, and mucous membranes. On the skin, it usually appears as purplish, itchy, flat-topped bumps. In the mouth, it forms lacy white patches.
Common Symptoms
- Purplish, flat bumps, most often on the inner forearm, wrist or ankle
- Itching
- Lacy-white patches in the mouth or on the lips (oral lichen planus)
- Painful sores in the mouth or vagina
- Hair loss
- Nail damage or loss
Common Causes
- Believed to be an autoimmune disorder. It can be triggered by certain medications, infections (like hepatitis C), or allergens.
Treatment Information
On the skin, it may clear on its own. Treatments include topical corticosteroids, retinoids, and phototherapy. Oral lichen planus can be more persistent and difficult to treat.
