Lymphedema

Description

Refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that's usually drained through the body's lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and genitals.

Common Symptoms

  • Swelling of part or all of an arm or leg, including fingers or toes
  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Aching or discomfort
  • Recurring infections
  • Hardening and thickening of the skin (fibrosis)

Common Causes

  • Can be primary (due to rare, inherited conditions) or secondary. Secondary lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system, most commonly from cancer treatment (surgery to remove lymph nodes or radiation).

Treatment Information

There is no cure. Treatment focuses on managing the swelling and preventing complications through exercise, wrapping the limb, massage (manual lymph drainage), and compression garments.
