Lymphoma
Description
Cancer that begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes. These cells are in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body. The two main types are Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).
Common Symptoms
- Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits, or groin
- Persistent fatigue
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained weight loss
- Itchy skin
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown. It begins when a lymphocyte develops a genetic mutation. Risk factors include age, being male, an impaired immune system, and certain infections.
Treatment Information
Depends on the type and stage. Treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, and stem cell transplant.
