Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Description
An eye disease that can blur your central vision. It happens when aging causes damage to the macula — the part of the eye that controls sharp, straight-ahead vision. There are two types: dry AMD (more common) and wet AMD (more serious).
Common Symptoms
- Blurred or "fuzzy" central vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
- Reduced intensity or brightness of colors
- A well-defined blurry spot or blind spot in your field of vision
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown, but it is strongly associated with aging. Genetics, smoking, and high blood pressure are major risk factors.
Treatment Information
There is no cure. For dry AMD, specific vitamin supplements (AREDS2) can slow progression. For wet AMD, treatments include anti-VEGF injections into the eye and laser therapy.
