Measles (Rubeola)
Description
A highly contagious viral illness that causes a characteristic skin rash and fever. It can lead to serious complications, especially in young children and adults, including pneumonia and encephalitis (brain inflammation). It is preventable by vaccine.
Common Symptoms
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Koplik spots (tiny white spots inside the mouth)
- A red, blotchy skin rash that starts on the face and spreads downwards
Common Causes
- Infection with the measles virus (a species of Morbillivirus), spread through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. The virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where an infected person coughed or sneezed.
Treatment Information
No specific antiviral treatment exists. Care is supportive and includes rest, fluids, and fever reducers. Vitamin A supplements are often recommended. Prevention is achieved through the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.
