Melanoma
Description
The most serious type of skin cancer that develops in the melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. It is more dangerous because it is much more likely to spread to other parts of the body if not caught early.
Common Symptoms
- A new, unusual mole or a change in an existing mole. Use the ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variations, Diameter (larger than 1/4 inch), and Evolving (changing).
Common Causes
- The primary cause is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning beds. Risk factors include fair skin, a history of severe sunburns, and having many moles.
Treatment Information
Early-stage melanoma can often be cured with surgical removal. Advanced cases may require immunotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or radiation.
