Meniere's Disease
Description
A disorder of the inner ear that can lead to dizzy spells (vertigo) and hearing loss. In most cases, Meniere's disease affects only one ear. It can occur at any age, but it usually starts between young and middle-aged adulthood.
Common Symptoms
- Recurring episodes of vertigo (spinning sensation)
- Hearing loss that may come and go
- Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear (aural fullness)
Common Causes
- The cause is unknown, but symptoms appear to be the result of an abnormal amount of fluid (endolymph) in the inner ear.
Treatment Information
There is no cure. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms with medications for vertigo, a low-salt diet, and diuretics. In severe cases, procedures or surgery may be options.
