Meningitis
Description
An inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While it can be caused by injury or drugs, the most common cause is infection by viruses or bacteria. Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Common Symptoms
- Sudden high fever
- Stiff neck
- Severe headache that seems different from normal
- Nausea or vomiting
- Confusion or difficulty concentrating
- Seizures
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
Common Causes
- Viral infections (most common and less severe) or bacterial infections (more severe and life-threatening). Fungal and parasitic infections are rarer.
Treatment Information
Bacterial meningitis requires immediate hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics. Viral meningitis is usually less severe and resolves on its own with supportive care.
