Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Description

A potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers, causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.

Common Symptoms

  • Numbness or weakness in limbs
  • Partial or complete loss of vision (optic neuritis)
  • Tingling or pain
  • Electric-shock sensations with neck movements (Lhermitte sign)
  • Tremor, lack of coordination, or unsteady gait
  • Fatigue and dizziness

Common Causes

  • The cause is unknown. It's an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. A combination of genetics and environmental factors appears to be responsible.

Treatment Information

No cure exists. Treatments focus on managing attacks, slowing disease progression with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), and managing symptoms.
