Myasthenia Gravis

Description

A chronic autoimmune, neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles. This weakness worsens after periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Certain muscles such as those that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, chewing, talking, and swallowing are often involved.

Common Symptoms

  • Drooping of one or both eyelids (ptosis)
  • Double vision (diplopia)
  • Altered speaking
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Weakness in the arms, hands, fingers, legs, and neck
  • Shortness of breath

Common Causes

  • An autoimmune disorder where antibodies block or destroy receptor sites for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, preventing muscle contraction.

Treatment Information

Treatments include medications like cholinesterase inhibitors (pyridostigmine), corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants. Thymectomy (surgical removal of the thymus gland) may be effective.
