Neurofibromatosis (NF)

Description

A group of three distinct genetic disorders (NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis) that cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. The tumors are usually benign (noncancerous) but can sometimes become malignant.

Common Symptoms

  • NF1: Cafe-au-lait spots (flat, light brown spots on the skin), neurofibromas (soft bumps on or under the skin), freckling in armpits/groin, Lisch nodules (tiny bumps on the iris).
  • NF2: Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), poor balance.

Common Causes

  • Caused by genetic mutations that are either inherited or occur spontaneously at conception.

Treatment Information

No cure exists. Treatment involves monitoring for complications and surgery or other therapies to manage tumors and symptoms as they arise.
