Oral Cancer (Mouth Cancer)

Description

A type of head and neck cancer, this refers to cancer that develops in any of the parts that make up the mouth (oral cavity). This can include the lips, gums, tongue, inner lining of the cheeks, roof of the mouth, and floor of the mouth.

Common Symptoms

  • A sore on the lip or in the mouth that won't heal
  • A white or reddish patch on the inside of the mouth
  • A lump or thickening on the lips, gums, or cheek
  • Loose teeth
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Difficulty chewing

Common Causes

  • The main risk factors are tobacco use of any kind (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco) and heavy alcohol use. Infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is a risk factor for cancers in the back of the mouth.

Treatment Information

Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the cancerous growth, followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells.
