Osteoporosis
Description
A bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. As a result, bones become weak, brittle, and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from minor bumps. It is often called a "silent disease" as there are no symptoms until a fracture occurs.
Common Symptoms
- Often asymptomatic in early stages
- Later stages: Back pain from a fractured vertebra
- Loss of height over time
- A stooped posture (kyphosis)
- A bone that breaks much more easily than expected
Common Causes
- Bone mass is lost faster than it is created. Risk factors include aging, being female, low calcium intake, menopause, certain medications, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Treatment Information
Medications that slow bone loss (bisphosphonates), adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, and regular weight-bearing exercise.
