Paget's Disease of Bone
Description
A chronic disorder that can result in enlarged and misshapen bones. It's caused by the excessive breakdown and formation of bone, followed by disorganized bone remodeling. This can cause bone to weaken, resulting in bone pain, arthritis, deformities, and fractures.
Common Symptoms
- Often asymptomatic
- Bone pain is the most common symptom
- Headaches and hearing loss (if the skull is affected)
- Enlarged or deformed bones
- Nerve compression
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown, but a combination of environmental and genetic factors seems to contribute. It is more common in older adults.
Treatment Information
If symptoms are present, bisphosphonates are the main treatment to help regulate bone remodeling. Surgery may be needed to help with fractures or deformities.
