Panic Disorder
Description
An anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks are sudden periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, pounding heart, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, numbness, or a feeling that something terrible is going to happen.
Common Symptoms
- Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks
- Persistent concern or worry about additional panic attacks or their consequences
- A significant maladaptive change in behavior related to the attacks (such as avoiding situations that might trigger an attack).
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown, but genetics, major stress, and a temperament that is more sensitive to stress may play a role.
Treatment Information
Psychotherapy (CBT is very effective) and medications, such as SSRIs and benzodiazepines (for short-term use).
