Peptic Ulcer Disease
Description
A condition in which painful sores or ulcers develop on the lining of your stomach or the first part of your small intestine (the duodenum). A stomach ulcer is called a gastric ulcer, while one in the duodenum is called a duodenal ulcer.
Common Symptoms
- Burning stomach pain is the most common symptom
- Feeling of fullness, bloating or belching
- Fatty food intolerance
- Heartburn
- Nausea
Common Causes
- The most common causes are infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen.
Treatment Information
Treatment usually involves medication to decrease stomach acid production, and if H. pylori is the cause, a course of antibiotics.
