Peripheral Neuropathy
Description
A condition resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves, which are the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. It often causes weakness, numbness, and pain, usually in the hands and feet, but it can also affect other areas of the body.
Common Symptoms
- Gradual onset of numbness, prickling, or tingling in your feet or hands
- Sharp, jabbing, throbbing, or burning pain
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Lack of coordination and falling
- Muscle weakness
Common Causes
- Diabetes is the most common cause. Other causes include traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes, and exposure to toxins.
Treatment Information
Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause and relieving symptoms. Pain relievers, anti-seizure medications, and antidepressants are often used to manage nerve pain.
