Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

Description

A highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In its early stages, it appears to be nothing more than the common cold, but it can become very serious, especially for infants, causing uncontrollable, violent coughing fits that often make it hard to breathe.

Common Symptoms

  • Early symptoms mimic a cold (runny nose, low-grade fever, mild cough). After 1-2 weeks, the cough evolves into severe fits followed by a high-pitched "whoop" sound during the next breath of air. Vomiting and exhaustion often follow the coughing fits.

Common Causes

  • Infection with the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, spread through airborne droplets.

Treatment Information

Treated with antibiotics. Early treatment is very important to lessen the severity of the illness. Vaccination (DTaP for children, Tdap for adolescents and adults) is key for prevention.
