Plantar Fasciitis
Description
One of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of each foot and connects the heel bone to the toes.
Common Symptoms
- Stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel
- Pain is usually the worst with the first few steps after awakening, though it can also be triggered by long periods of standing.
Common Causes
- The plantar fascia is in the shape of a bowstring, supporting the arch of your foot. If tension and stress on this bowstring become too great, small tears can arise in the fascia.
Treatment Information
Rest, ice, stretching exercises, and supportive shoes or orthotics. Physical therapy and corticosteroid injections may also be used.
