Pneumonia
Description
An infection that inflames the air sacs (alveoli) in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, causing cough with phlegm, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. It can be caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Common Symptoms
- Chest pain when breathing or coughing
- Cough which may produce greenish, yellow, or even bloody mucus
- Fatigue
- Fever, sweating, and shaking chills
- Shortness of breath
- Confusion (especially in older adults)
Common Causes
- Bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae is common), viruses (influenza, RSV, SARS-CoV-2), or fungi. It can be community-acquired, hospital-acquired, or aspiration pneumonia.
Treatment Information
Antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia, antiviral medications for some viral types. Hospitalization may be required for severe cases for IV fluids, oxygen therapy, and respiratory support.
