Poliomyelitis (Polio)
Description
A disabling and life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can infect a person’s spinal cord, causing paralysis. Thanks to a successful global vaccination campaign, polio is now rare.
Common Symptoms
- Most people (about 72%) who get infected will have no visible symptoms. About 1 in 4 people will have flu-like symptoms. A smaller proportion of people will develop more serious symptoms that affect the brain and spinal cord, such as paresthesia, meningitis, and paralysis.
Common Causes
- Infection with the poliovirus, which spreads through the fecal-oral route and, less frequently, through contaminated water or food.
Treatment Information
There is no cure. Treatment involves supportive care to manage symptoms. Prevention through vaccination is the only way to combat the disease.
