Polycythemia Vera (PV)
Description
A type of slow-growing blood cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many red blood cells. This excess of cells thickens the blood, slowing its flow, which can cause serious problems, such as blood clots.
Common Symptoms
- Headache, dizziness, and weakness
- Shortness of breath, especially when lying down
- Itchiness, especially after a warm bath or shower
- A feeling of pressure or fullness below the ribs on the left side (due to an enlarged spleen)
- Unusual bleeding
Common Causes
- Caused by a mutation in a gene, most commonly the JAK2 gene, which causes the bone marrow to produce too many red blood cells.
Treatment Information
There is no cure. Treatment focuses on reducing the amount of red blood cells and preventing blood clots, through procedures like phlebotomy (blood removal) and medications like hydroxyurea or aspirin.
