Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR)
Description
An inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders and hips. Signs and symptoms of PMR usually begin quickly and are worse in the morning. It mostly affects people over age 65.
Common Symptoms
- Aches or pain in the shoulders (often the first symptom)
- Aches or pain in the neck, upper arms, buttocks, hips or thighs
- Stiffness in affected areas, particularly in the morning
- Fatigue
- Low-grade fever
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown. A combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as viral infections, likely plays a role.
Treatment Information
Treated with a low dose of corticosteroids, such as prednisone. Symptoms respond quickly to treatment, but medication is usually required for one to two years or longer.
