Psoriasis

Description

A chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells. This buildup of cells causes scaling on the skin’s surface. Inflammation and redness around the scales are common. Psoriatic scales are typically whitish-silver and develop in thick, red patches.

Common Symptoms

  • Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales
  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed or itch
  • Itching, burning, or soreness
  • Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails
  • Swollen and stiff joints (psoriatic arthritis)

Common Causes

  • An overactive immune system that attacks healthy skin cells by mistake, causing them to be produced too quickly. Genetics and environmental triggers play a role.
