Rabies
Description
A deadly virus spread to people from the saliva of infected animals, usually through a bite. Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear. However, it is preventable if medical care is received promptly after exposure.
Common Symptoms
- Early symptoms include fever, headache, and general weakness. As it progresses, neurological symptoms appear: anxiety, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, insomnia, paralysis, and hydrophobia (fear of water).
Common Causes
- Infection with the rabies virus (a lyssavirus), transmitted through the saliva of an infected mammal, typically via a bite.
Treatment Information
There is no effective treatment once symptoms begin. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which includes a series of rabies vaccine shots and a dose of rabies immune globulin, is highly effective at preventing the disease if given soon after exposure.
