Rubella (German Measles)
Description
A contagious viral infection best known by its distinctive red rash. It is generally a mild illness in children and adults. However, it is extremely dangerous for a developing baby if a pregnant woman becomes infected, leading to Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS).
Common Symptoms
- Mild fever
- Headache
- Stuffy or runny nose
- A fine, pink rash that begins on the face and spreads
- Aching joints
- Swollen lymph nodes
Common Causes
- Infection with the rubella virus, spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Treatment Information
There is no specific treatment. Management is symptomatic with rest and pain relievers. The MMR vaccine prevents rubella.
