Description

A common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food.

Common Symptoms

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, chills, and headache. Symptoms usually appear 6 hours to 6 days after infection.

Common Causes

  • Infection with Salmonella bacteria, commonly found in raw poultry, eggs, beef, and sometimes unwashed fruits and vegetables. Also can be acquired from contact with infected animals, especially reptiles.

Treatment Information

Most people recover without specific treatment. The main focus is on replacing fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration. Antibiotics are typically only used for severe infections or high-risk individuals.
