Sarcoidosis
Description
A chronic disease characterized by the growth of tiny collections of inflammatory cells (granulomas) in any part of your body — most commonly the lungs and lymph nodes. The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, but experts think it results from the body's immune system responding to an unknown substance.
Common Symptoms
- Symptoms vary depending on the organs affected. General symptoms include fatigue, fever, and weight loss. Lung symptoms include a persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Skin rashes are also common.
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown. It is thought to be an exaggerated immune response to an unknown trigger in genetically susceptible individuals.
Treatment Information
There is no cure. Many people require no treatment if symptoms are mild. If needed, the primary treatment is corticosteroids like prednisone. Other immunosuppressant drugs may also be used.
