Scabies
Description
An itchy skin condition caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. The intense itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows and is typically worse at night.
Common Symptoms
- Intense itching, especially at night.
- A pimple-like rash.
- Burrow tracks, which appear as tiny raised, discolored lines on the skin surface.
Common Causes
- Infestation of the skin by the human itch mite. It spreads by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies.
Treatment Information
Treated with prescription scabicide lotions or creams. Because scabies is so contagious, doctors often recommend treatment for the entire family or contact group.
