Scarlet Fever
Description
A bacterial illness that develops in some people who have strep throat. It features a bright red rash that covers most of the body. Scarlet fever is almost always accompanied by a sore throat and a high fever.
Common Symptoms
- A very red, sore throat
- Fever
- A rash that looks like a sunburn and feels like sandpaper
- A "strawberry tongue" that looks red and bumpy
- Flushed face with a pale ring around the mouth.
Common Causes
- Caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat, group A Streptococcus, which produces a toxin that causes the rash.
Treatment Information
Treated with a full course of antibiotics, the same as for strep throat, to prevent rare but serious complications like rheumatic fever.
