Schizophrenia

Description

A serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling.

Common Symptoms

  • Positive Symptoms: Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking/speech.
  • Negative Symptoms: Reduced emotional expression, lack of motivation (avolition), social withdrawal.
  • Cognitive Symptoms: Poor executive functioning, trouble focusing.

Common Causes

  • A combination of genetics, brain chemistry (involving dopamine and glutamate), and environmental factors is thought to contribute to the development of the disorder.

Treatment Information

A lifelong condition that requires treatment, even when symptoms have subsided. Treatment with medications (antipsychotics) and psychosocial therapy is essential.
