Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis)

Description

A group of rare, chronic autoimmune diseases that involve the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues. In some people, scleroderma affects only the skin (localized). But in many people, it also harms internal organs, such as the lungs, heart, and kidneys (systemic).

Common Symptoms

  • Hardening and tightening of patches of skin
  • Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers and toes turn white, blue, then red in response to cold or stress)
  • Acid reflux (GERD)
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Shortness of breath

Common Causes

  • An autoimmune condition where the immune system triggers an overproduction of collagen, leading to fibrosis (scarring). The exact cause is unknown.

Treatment Information

No cure exists. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and organ complications, and may include medications to improve blood flow, suppress the immune system, and treat specific organ issues.
