Scoliosis

Description

A sideways curvature of the spine that most often occurs during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most childhood scoliosis is unknown (idiopathic).

Common Symptoms

  • Uneven shoulders
  • One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
  • Uneven waist
  • One hip higher than the other

Common Causes

  • The cause of the most common type is unknown (idiopathic). Other types are congenital (present at birth) or neuromuscular (related to another condition).

Treatment Information

Depends on the severity of the curve. Children with mild scoliosis may just need monitoring. Bracing may be used to prevent the curve from worsening. Surgery may be needed for severe curves.
