Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Description

A viral infection that causes a painful rash, usually as a single stripe of blisters on one side of the torso. It is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox, which lies dormant in nerve tissue for years.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain, burning, numbness, or tingling (often the first symptom)
  • A red rash that begins a few days after the pain
  • Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over
  • Itching
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Sensitivity to light

Common Causes

  • Reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in someone who has previously had chickenpox. Risk increases with age and weakened immunity.

Treatment Information

Antiviral drugs (acyclovir, valacyclovir) to speed healing and reduce complications. Pain relievers and topical treatments for symptom relief. A vaccine (Shingrix) is highly effective for prevention.
