Description
Common injuries that share similar signs and symptoms, but involve different parts of your body. A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments — the tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones at a joint. A strain is a stretching or tearing of muscle or tendon.
Common Symptoms

- Swelling
- Bruising
- Limited ability to move the affected joint or use the muscle
Common Causes
- Sprains are often caused by a fall or twist that forces a joint out of its normal position. Strains are caused by twisting or pulling a muscle or tendon, often from overexertion.
Treatment Information
Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E.). Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with pain and inflammation. Physical therapy may be needed for severe injuries.
