Stroke

Description

A medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients, causing brain cells to die. Ischemic strokes are from blockages, and hemorrhagic strokes are from bleeding.

Common Symptoms

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Common Causes

  • Ischemic: A blocked artery, usually from a blood clot.
  • Hemorrhagic: A leaking or bursting blood vessel.

Treatment Information

Emergency treatment is critical. Ischemic strokes may be treated with clot-busting drugs (tPA) or clot removal procedures. Hemorrhagic strokes may require surgery. Long-term rehabilitation is often necessary.
