Testicular Cancer

Description

Cancer that develops in the testicles, a part of the male reproductive system. Compared with other types of cancer, testicular cancer is rare. But it is the most common cancer in American males between the ages of 15 and 35. It is highly treatable, even when cancer has spread.

Common Symptoms

  • A lump or enlargement in either testicle
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • A dull ache in the abdomen or groin
  • A sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum
  • Pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum

Common Causes

  • The exact causes are not known. Risk factors include an undescended testicle (cryptorchidism), abnormal testicle development, and a family history of the disease.

Treatment Information

Treatment depends on the type and stage. Surgery to remove the testicle (orchiectomy) is the primary treatment. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be used, especially if the cancer has spread.
