Thalassemia
Description
An inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin enables red blood cells to carry oxygen. Thalassemia can cause anemia, leaving you fatigued. The severity depends on the type and number of gene mutations.
Common Symptoms
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Facial bone deformities
- Slow growth
- Dark urine
- Abdominal swelling
Common Causes
- Caused by mutations in the DNA of cells that make hemoglobin. It is an inherited disorder.
Treatment Information
Mild forms may not need treatment. More severe forms require frequent blood transfusions and chelation therapy to remove excess iron from the blood.
