Thyroid Cancer
Description
Cancer that occurs in the cells of the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. Most cases of thyroid cancer can be cured with treatment, as they are often detected early and grow slowly.
Common Symptoms
- A lump (nodule) that can be felt through the skin on your neck
- Changes to your voice, including increasing hoarseness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pain in your neck and throat
- Swollen lymph nodes in your neck
Common Causes
- It occurs when cells in the thyroid develop genetic changes (mutations). Risk factors include being female, exposure to high levels of radiation, and certain inherited genetic syndromes.
Treatment Information
Most cases are treated with surgery to remove the thyroid (thyroidectomy), followed by thyroid hormone therapy. Radioactive iodine may be used to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue.
