Tinnitus
Description
The perception of noise or ringing in the ears. A common problem, tinnitus affects about 15% to 20% of people. It isn't a condition itself — it's a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury, or a circulatory system disorder.
Common Symptoms
- The perception of phantom noises in your ears, such as ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, hissing, or humming. The noise can vary in pitch and can be in one or both ears.
Common Causes
- Often a symptom of an underlying condition. Common causes include age-related hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, earwax blockage, and changes in the ear bones.
Treatment Information
Treating an identified underlying cause may help. Other treatments focus on reducing or masking the noise, such as using white noise machines or wearable sound generators. Cognitive behavioral therapy can also be helpful.
