Trichomoniasis ("Trich")
Description
A very common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by infection with a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Although symptoms of the disease vary, most people who have the parasite cannot tell they are infected.
Common Symptoms
- About 70% of people have no signs or symptoms. When they occur, they can include itching, burning, or redness of the genitals; discomfort with urination; and a thin discharge with an unusual smell from the vagina or penis.
Common Causes
- Infection with the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, spread through sexual contact.
Treatment Information
Can be cured with a single dose of a prescription antibiotic medication (either metronidazole or tinidazole).
