Uterine Cancer (Endometrial Cancer)
Description
Cancer that begins in the uterus. The most common type starts in the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) and is called endometrial cancer. It is one of the most common cancers of the female reproductive system.
Common Symptoms
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause
- Bleeding between periods
- An abnormal, watery or blood-tinged discharge from the vagina
- Pelvic pain
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unknown, but it is strongly linked to high levels of the hormone estrogen. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes, never having been pregnant, and taking estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy.
Treatment Information
Mainly treated with surgery, typically a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Depending on the stage, radiation, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy may also be recommended.
