Varicose Veins

Description

Gnarled, enlarged veins, most commonly appearing in the legs and feet. This occurs when faulty valves in the veins allow blood to flow in the wrong direction or to pool. For many people, they are simply a cosmetic concern, but for others, they can cause aching pain and discomfort.

Common Symptoms

  • Veins that are dark purple or blue in color
  • Veins that appear twisted and bulging
  • An achy or heavy feeling in your legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs
  • Itching around one or more of your veins

Common Causes

  • Weak or damaged valves can lead to varicose veins. Risk factors include age, being female, pregnancy, family history, obesity, and standing or sitting for long periods.

Treatment Information

Self-care, such as exercise, elevating your legs and wearing compression stockings. Medical procedures to close off or remove veins include sclerotherapy, laser treatment, and vein stripping.
