West Nile Virus Infection
Description
A disease spread by infected mosquitoes. Most people infected with West Nile virus will have no symptoms. About 1 in 5 will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1% develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness.
Common Symptoms
- Most people are asymptomatic. Febrile illness: fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.
- Severe illness (neuroinvasive disease): high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, and paralysis.
Common Causes
- Infection with the West Nile virus, transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Treatment Information
There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to reduce fever and relieve some symptoms. In severe cases, patients often need to be hospitalized to receive supportive treatment.
