Yellow Fever

Description

A viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes, with symptoms including fever, headache, and vomiting. In severe cases, it can cause life-threatening heart, liver, and kidney conditions. The "yellow" in the name refers to the jaundice that affects some patients.

Common Symptoms

  • Initial phase: fever, muscle pain, headache, shivers, loss of appetite, and nausea or vomiting.
  • Toxic phase (in ~15% of patients): high fever, jaundice, abdominal pain with vomiting, and bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes or stomach.

Common Causes

  • Infection with the yellow fever virus, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily Aedes species.

Treatment Information

There is no specific antiviral drug. Treatment is supportive, aimed at managing dehydration, and liver and kidney failure. A highly effective vaccine offers prevention.
