Zika Virus
Description
A disease caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. While symptoms are often mild, Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect called microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects.
Common Symptoms
- Many people have no symptoms. When present, they are mild and include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).
Common Causes
- Infection with the Zika virus, spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. It can also be transmitted through sexual contact.
Treatment Information
There is no specific medicine or vaccine. Treatment is supportive and includes rest, fluids, and medication for pain and fever.
