Zika Virus

Description

A disease caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. While symptoms are often mild, Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect called microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects.

  • Many people have no symptoms. When present, they are mild and include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).

Common Causes

  • Infection with the Zika virus, spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. It can also be transmitted through sexual contact.
